At 20th Century Fox’s CinemaCon presentation Thursday, director James Cameron took the stage to announce that his vision for the _Avatar_ franchise has expanded further. “We’ve begun to bump up against the limitations of our art form,” said Cameron. “There’s just too much story.” And so: There will be four _Avatar_ sequels. You should be suspicious of any promises about release dates, but Cameron outlined a Christmas release schedule for the films: _Avatar 2_ in Christmas 2018; _Avatar 3_ in Christmas 2020; _Avatar 4_ in Christmas 2022; and _Avatar 5_ in Christmas 2023\. “Each one of which stands alone,” Cameron promised, “but which together form a complete saga.” The presentation ended with Cameron showing off some concept art for the next four _Avatar_ movies. Lots of green and blue, and I think I saw an alien turtle swimming. We will send them a message-- that this is our land. >> The movie takes place in the future and our world running out of energy. So we have to go to another planet that we found a life form on called Pandora and we travel there to find and mine their energy source. So when we get there, we realized that, you know, we have to communicate with these indigenous species on the planet and by doing that we use Avatars, which are DNA from my character Norm Spellman, who's an anthropologist and is wanting to assimilate into their lifestyle and DNA from the Na'vi, which is the indigenous species. So they take these and clone a version of me that is 10- feet tall and blue and looks just like them so it's three avatars, it's, you know, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and myself. >> We have an indigenous population called the Na'vi. They are very hard to kill. >> This is why we're here because this little gray rock sells for 20 million a kilo. >> Jim does such a good job of starting with a story and breaking it off from there, you know, all of the 3D and the CG and all of that is a ground- breaking technology in a way to tell the story but it all-- the core root of what we're doing is trying to tell a best story that we can-- >> The village happens to be resting on the richest deposit and they need to relocate. Those savages are threatening our whole operation. We're on the brink of war and you're supposed to be finding a diplomatic solution. >> When you walk into this movie, you're walking into the world that he spent a decade creating. You know, he wrote and conceive this thing a long time ago and sort of waited for technology to catch up. You know, this world that we go in to Pandora is so beautiful and, you know, the jungles that we're in are, you know, they're beautiful, they're dangerous. They're-- every little plant could be an enemy to every big giant animal on the planet and it is really cool to see when we come there. You know, how this gravity inform us on the planet. How does, you know, we can't breathe so, you know, what is the oxygen that they're breathing. How do their lungs work? Again, we got a guy at the helm that has studied all of this, knows it and really, you know, can fill those gaps so that there's no stone left unturned. And as an actor, you know, I'm gonna have to study all of this information. We sat and discuss everything. One of the first things that we did as a cast, you know, when everybody, the first time we all met each others, we sat down and we read through a lot of it and we discuss what we didn't understand which, you know, for me was a lot. And another thing that we did as a cast as we all-- he took us out to Hawaii and we sort of tramped around the jungle in Hawaii and got to know the lay of the lands so that we understood what, you know, we were grabbing under a tree or a branch or struggling with some mud or falling into water. All of that, we could take back to this big gray space when we're doing motion caption. You know, you don't have those things. So he wanted to give us that opportunity of understanding, you know, how to relate with the wild life around us. And, you know, we used some green screen from time to time. But when we're on the live action site, we were shooting in front of 3D cameras. You know, we had cameras in front of us that were capturing whatever we're doing and then make up done. We have to be in wardrobe. We have giant sets behind us, you know. This was on the New Zealand side of the shooting. But when we shot in the motion capture world, there's no green screen. There's-- you know, you're in a vault, what we called the volume. It's a big gray space and they'll make land and again, put the stance up so that we are grabbing onto things. But it's just, it's like going back to block box theater. You're just-- you're having to imagine what's surrounds you and what they do is, there's infrared cameras above you. There's like 200 infrared cameras that are capturing the motion from the dots that are all over our body. So if I'm walking around, I'm gesturing the way that I'm gesturing. It's taking that, and it's seeing that so it's really is me. It's different than being animated that's why I don't even-- I choose them and even call it animation. >> It's kind of a pinch- me moment that we're actually getting to make this movie. >> I think that this is Jim's fashion project. He puts 150 percent into everything. He's the most passionate guy on set and, you know, we're just trying to live up to those-- to that passion. You know, one of the, we were in New Zealand and we have to shoot something like 14 days in a row and it was, Sam and I had-- went and got a drink afterwards and Jim was there, and he's like. " You guys look tired ." And I was like, " Yeah ," I'm pretty tired. I've never work, you know, 14 days in a row. That's a lot, you know. And these are long days, these are 12 to 14 hours a day sometimes. So, I was like, " Yeah. We're tired. This is draining ." And he's like, " I've worked one year straight and you're complaining about 14 damn days? Have another drink ." When you're on a movie for that long, you know, for three years, you know. This is a journey that you're now gonna take and it's a family. You become a family, you know, so communicate like a family. You disagree like a family. You agree, you party, you're happy, you know. You have everything together.
