Russian Warplanes Simulated an Attack on a U.S. Ship, Official Says

1 minute read

Two Russian warplanes simulated an attack on an American guided missile destroyer Tuesday, according to an U.S. official.

In a report by Reuters, an official speaking anonymously said that the Sukhoi SU-24 warplanes flew so close that they created “wake in the water.” The warplanes, which had no visible weaponry according to Reuters, were followed by seven passes from a Russian KA-27 Helix helicopter that was taking pictures of the USS Donald Cook.

The official described the incident as one of the most aggressive acts in recent memory.

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin skipped the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, a perceived snub that President Obama addressed.

“Because of the vision that he’s been pursuing of emphasizing military might, we have not seen the type of progress that I would have hoped for with Russia,” Obama said.
