On the heels of International Women’s Day, Epix is showcasing a docuseries exploring the gender gap in Hollywood, including the lack of female directors helming big-budget projects.
The 4%: Film’s Gender Problem is a series of six short films from Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions (Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine), featuring insights, questions, and stories from directors and other creative personalities, as well as academics, all sharing insights and questions about the role of women in Hollywood.
Participants included Judd Apatow, Lake Bell, Patricia Clarkson, Toni Collette, Paul Feig, America Ferrera, James Franco, Michael Moore, and Catherine Hardwicke.
The shorts, directed by Caroline Suh, will screen on Epix throughout the month on March, and a number of clips from the project are currently available to watch online. One questions why women aren’t directing big-budget films, while others delve into issues like the lack of female perspective in film and the conditioning to think “director” means male.
