Bundle up — the forecast calls for more Frozen.
The next chapter in the hit Disney franchise will come in the form of an original animated holiday special to air in 2017, ABC announced Tuesday.
The voice cast from the blockbuster 2013 film will return, including Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, and Josh Gad. Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton (Prep & Landing) are directing the special, which does not have a title or date nailed down. Roy Conli (Big Hero 6) is producing.
Loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “Snow Queen” fairy tale, Frozen has snowballed into a major property for Disney, which owns ABC.
The original film grossed nearly $1.28 billion at the worldwide box office (making it the biggest animated film ever), won two Academy Awards, and had a hit soundtrack. It has also spawned several spinoffs, including a touring ice show, the animated short “Frozen Fever,” and a Broadway musical.
