Campbell Soup is set to become the first major food company to disclose genetically modified ingredients on its labels.
Campbell, which makes brands including Pepperidge Farm, Prego, Plum Organics and V8, will both begin disclosing genetically engineered ingredients on its own labels, as well as push for a federally mandated labeling system for foods that contain such ingredients, the New York Times reports.
“We’re optimistic that a federal solution can be reached in a reasonable amount of time, but if that’s not the case, we’re preparing to label all our products across the portfolio,” Denise Morrison, chief executive of Campbell, told the Times. The new labeling will take up to 18 months.

Morrison said about three-quarters of Campbell products contain ingredients derived from corn, canola, soybeans and sugar beets, which are the four largest genetically modified crops.
