The Golden Globe Awards are often seen as a precursor to the Academy Awards. But the Globes are more than just an Oscars lead-in: the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honors the best in both movies and television over the previous year, and its varied categories provide a number of films with the best — and perhaps only — venue to receive professional validation.
The nominations were announced Thursday morning by Angela Bassett, America Ferrera, Chloë Grace Moretz, Dennis Quaid, Miss Golden Globe Corinne Fox, HFPA president Lorenzo Soria, and Dick Clark Productions EVP Barry Adelman. The Big Short and Carol led in the film categories, though there were some pleasant surprises in the form of Sylvester Stallone’s supporting actor nomination for Creed, and Al Pacino for Danny Collins. The TV categories were slightly more varied, though awards-season mainstays like Orange Is the New Black and Transparent got their fair share of nominees, and surprises included nominations for Rachel Bloom for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Lady Gaga for American Horror Story: Hotel.
Ahead, see the full list of nominees, and leave your snubs, surprises, and best guesses in the comments below. Stay tuned to EW for in-depth discussions and analysis from our critics.
The Golden Globe Awards will air Jan. 10 on NBC with Ricky Gervais set as host.
