Fatal Minneapolis Police Shooting Ruled a Homicide

The Minneapolis police shooting of an unarmed black man has been ruled as a homicide, says Minnesota state officials.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has deemed the death of Jamar Clark, 24, as a homicide on Tuesday, reports the Los Angeles Times. The FBI will also conduct an investigation on the Sunday morning shooting of Clark, who later died on Monday evening.

State Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans said at a news conference on Tuesday that the FBI will be conducting a civil rights investigation. He says investigators found handcuffs at the scene but have yet to determine whether whether police had put them on Clark.

Witnesses allege that Clark was handcuffed when he was shot after a dispute with Minneapolis police officers. Officials say he was unarmed but are still trying to determine whether he was restrained.

Clark’s shooting has set off angry street demonstrations in Minneapolis. Over the past year, deaths of unarmed black people at the hands of U.S. police officers has spawned a civil rights movement called Black Lives Matter.
