The Federal Aviation Administration announced in a press release on Tuesday that drones will not be permitted in the areas that the Pope plans on visiting while in the U.S.
The Pope will be appearing in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York. All unmanned aircraft will be prohibited from those places, as well as their surrounding communities, from September 22 through September 27. Those areas have been designated as “No Drone Zones.”
There are already strict drone restrictions surrounding Washington, D.C.. The FAA has temporarily increased those restrictions for the duration of the Pope’s historic visit.
FAA Administrator Michael Huerta warns that there may be consequences if drone flyers fail to comply with restrictions: “If you plan to attend any of the Papal visit events, please leave your drone at home. Anyone flying a drone within the designated restricted areas may be subject to civil and criminal charges.”
