(And, while we’re on the topic, [when was the last time you washed them?](http://fortune.com/2014/05/20/levi-strauss-ceo-stop-washing-your-jeans/)) No matter your answer, Levi Strauss & Co. almost certainly has one on you. To mark the 142-year anniversary of Levi’s 501 jeans, the apparel maker announced on Wednesday that its archives department had acquired a pair that dates back to the 1880s. And, despite the fact that they are one of the oldest pairs of jeans in existence, they look pretty good. “Except for wear marks and a few minor holes and tears, the pants, which date to around the 1880s, are pristine,” according to a Levi’s [blog post](http://levistrauss.com/unzipped-blog/2015/05/new-nevada-jeans-acquisition/) on the acquisition. Levi’s has named the duds the “New Nevada Jeans,” as they were discovered in the Silver State. They sport a few minor differences from the ubiquitous 501 model. “The yoke is narrower, and the leather patch is in the middle of the waistband, rather than on the right side,” according to the company. Originally called “overalls,” [blue jeans date back to the American Gold Rush era](http://fortune.com/2014/09/18/brief-history-of-blue-jeans/) of the late 19th century. In 1873, the U.S. government granted a patent to Levi Strauss for what would become the company’s 501 jeans, based on its rivet-reinforced fastenings. Jeans were practical, tough work pants, the kind that could take a beating when you were out in the field. By the early 20th century, though, they had become a fashion statement, fit for the kind of people who had never even set foot on a working ranch. By the end of 2014, the company had hit its financial goals for the second year in a row. Full-year revenues increased 2% to $4.8 billion. Net income was down year, but adjusted EBIT—the company’s preferred measure to track profitability—was $504 million last year compared to $467 million in 2013\. We're really pleased to have you. >> Well, Tim Gunn is absolutely, completely floored and exhilarated and thrilled to be here. >> Well, let's get right into it. She is soon to be 50 and she is 5 feet 5 and she's size 6. >> Oh. >> And she's in search of a fashion sense for her body type. Now, a lot of women who are a little bigger than a size 6 wrote in asking about this and a lot of women who are a little older. >> Uh huh. >> I think the sense I get is a lot of them feel marginalized. >> They are marginalized. >> Right. >> Can I being honest? They are marginalized and we in the fashion industry have to do better by them and for them and stop having us our muse a 19- year- old or a 22- year- old who's a size 2. It's ridiculous and limiting. I think there's no greater challenge and no greater joy than dressing real women and having them look great and feel great and be age appropriate without being dowdy, without being remotely matronly. No one else look like that. For a pear- shaped woman, it's important to let your shoulders be your friend and I'm not talking about shoulder pads. I'm just talking about having items of apparel that go to the end of the shoulder, have a sleeve as opposed to being sleeveless or strapless, because it will visually broaden you and mitigate the effects of the hip. That's a critical element with the pear shaped. >> What's the worst fashion trend you've ever seen that you kinda seen in a book like what you think is the worst fashion trend, sandals and socks? >> Well, sandals and socks were certainly up there. You know, generally speaking, it's footwear trends. I mean today, the era of the croc, it looks like a plastic hoof. How can you take that seriously as fashion? The comfort trap is part of what's contributed to the decline of fashion in America. I called this lovafication of America and I-- whenever anyone defends their look by saying, " Well, it's comfortable ." My refrain is, " If you wanna dress to feel as you never got out of bed, don't get out of bed ." >> Tim, what specific star recommendations do you have for a typical American male? How can I look at stylish as you on what is probably allow a budget? >> Oh, actually-- I won't speak to budget because I also a very budget minded and have to be. People have this misconception, " Oh, I can just go out on either get anything for free or buy anything ." That's not true. People get it right more frequently, got their fashion right frequently when they're shopping on a budget than if they just have deep pockets or bottom with spit of a purse. Because then you just-- you don't think about how does it fit into my wardrobe, will am I really gonna wear this item or is it just impulse buying? This is what I want that I'm gonna have it versus shopping on a budget when you have to ask yourself those questions. Will I really wear it? Will I have more than one place in my fashion life? How does it fit in to the rest of my wardrobe? I mean questions that are really important. Fashion is really a form of semiotics. It sends a message and this message is about how you want to present yourself to the world and be perceived. And the key to getting that right is to understand what colors, what patterns look good on you and then it's that whole interaction of silhouette proportion and fit on you in particular in your body type and really understanding how you wanna portray yourself to the world. From a fashion viewpoint, Michelle Obama looks so comfortable and relaxed in her style and her fashion and she exudes that. She has a presence that gives you confidence on her. And Cindy McCain looks like someone has twisted her ponytail into a knot and try to give her a facelift. >> What is your favorite thing to wear? >> My favorite thing to wear-- Marion, you've stamped me. Well, given the appropriateness of the occasion, there is no better feeling for me than to go to a black tie event and a classic tuxedo. It's just-- It's no fail. There are no risks involved.
