And for all the variety on this year’s lineup, so many of the acts can still count among their influences a man born more than a century ago: Louis Armstrong. Of course, the musicians most influenced by Armstrong are those, like Jazz at Lincoln Center Managing and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis, who play the trumpet. “Anybody who can play considers Louis Armstrong an influence,” Marsalis says. “He’s the foundation of our grammar, syntax, of our way of playing.” Marsalis spoke with LIFE about jazz in New Orleans, and Louis Armstrong’s enduring impact on the city, its people and its music. Armstrong both came up in the music of the Big Easy—playing in church and in marching bands—and influenced it. “His spirit permeated New Orleans,” says Marsalis. ## Transcript [00:00] [ MUSIC ] [00:14] One of the things about New Orleans is that it's hard to [00:15] leave. Almost like a foreign city in the midst of America [00:20] is New Orleans. On [00:24] another world are its Mardi Gras, [00:28] its river levees. [00:32] [ MUSIC ] We had churches with, with all kinds of high [00:36] level music from the neighborhood church, storefront [00:39] churches To what they call holy roller churches. And [00:44] then you had the whole marching band tradition for [00:47] John Phillips Sousa and that was the most popular [00:49] music in America at that time. [ MUSIC ] [00:59] Out of tradition, you get someone like Louis Armstrong [01:01] Who comes up in the bosom of New Orleans music. [01:05] He sings church music plays marching band music [01:09] Hear they play slap spank that bass [01:14] hear the music and I mean this is where the blues is [01:17] born In New Orleans [ MUSIC ] His spirit [01:22] permeated New Orleans [ MUSIC ] not [01:27] only did bring this sound of jazz he was a person who [01:30] was a conservative of all of the New Orleans traditions [01:32] [ MUSIC ] with this level of genius he was learning [01:36] everything from blowing the tincan to singing in the [01:40] quartet on the corner, to all the things he had to do to [01:42] hustle to survive [ MUSIC ] [01:45] He was able to synthesize all of the musicians he [01:47] heard, and when that touched the world, people went [01:50] crazy. Did I do something wrong? Something [01:52] extraordinary. You were playing notes between flat [01:55] and natural. It's like discovering, secret scales just [01:58] made for this type of music. Horn, did you hear what [02:01] the gentleman said? [ MUSIC ] Anybody who can [02:07] play considers Louis Armstrong an influence. He's [02:11] the foundation of our grammar, the syntax of our way [02:14] of playing.
