Those who spent last fall tethered to their phones as the Serial podcast unfolded became familiar with a little voice in the show’s introduction. In a shout-out to a sponsor, email marketing service Mail Chimp, one voice struggled to get the company’s name right. “Mail…Kimp?” the voice cried out in undeniable upspeak.
“Mail Kimp” became a sensation, prompting Twitter jokes, mugs emblazoned with the company’s alternative name and even a dedicated Twitter account.
Thursday morning, NPR writer and host Linda Holmes tweeted out the truth about that little voice. Serial co-producer Julie Snyder had the scoop:
For shame — we’ve been mocking a 14-year-old kid this whole time.
