Berehulak will receive a $20,000 grant and Gannaway will receive a $5,000 grant to support their photography. Berehulak began his career working as a sports photographer and later focused on politics and news. He is probably best known for his work covering the Iraq war, the trial of Saddam Hussein, child labor in India and the return of Benazir Bhutto to Pakistan. Gannaway’s work often focuses on families and subcultures. She was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for feature photography for her series covering Carolynne St. Pierre’s terminal illness. “Having known Chris, it’s pretty overwhelming even being considered for it,” Berehulak tells TIME. “I looked up to him kind of like an older brother — the first time I went to Iraq I emailed Chris. I always looked to him for advice.” The Getty Images and Chris Hondros Fund Award was established by Hondros’s fiancée Christina Piaia to honor the photojournalist and two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee who was killed on April 20, 2011 while on assignment in Misrata, Libya. “Chris was not only an incredible journalist, but an incredible human being,” Berehulak adds. “He worked with such an integrity and passion — showing the human side of conflict.” Berehulak aims to use the award to support a personal project.
