And best wishes. >> I actually just asked if I could take the first three or four months and I didn't know, you know, what it would be like, but I said, " I just-- I I want the photograph, how he's perceived or what he perceives or what he sees? >> Forty- four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. Words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often, the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. >> I want pictures of Barack Obama, but I also want pictures that show what he sees, what he faces when he is being briefed by the staff, or you know, what he-- that show that he listens to what they have to say. He likes to hear from different people, what's going on. There's no problems meeting with both Republicans and Democrats. There's a photograph in the East Room and he's sitting at this long white table and it's President Obama and the entire Black Caucus. And they're sitting under a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. And I just think that-- you know, I didn't know Abraham Lincoln, but I think that it would mean a lot to him if he had known that some day his portrait would, you know, hang over not just the black president but an entire table of black leaders. And I-- So, I wanna show that that's one thing that is different with this White House. Sometimes, it just helps to not mind standing and just waiting and waiting. And when the meeting is really boring, there's a photograph of-- we're in the cabinet room and President Obama is going through prep for the press conference that he's gonna do, second press conference. And one thing I find with President Obama is that he wants to hear every side and every angle. And then, he usually just kind of closes his eyes and he takes it all in and he reflects upon it. And I had been sitting in there for an hour and it just, you know, wasn't-- there's just, you know, a man sitting on a table and then it came together. And if I hadn't just waited-- And I was sitting on the floor, crawling on my knees, looking for something and he just leaned back and closed his eyes. And it's more that-- I wanted to show something that is-- that it is the way that the world knew the president. And it is a lonely job. >> I wanted to get everyone together on the first day, you know, to welcome you to the White House. >> I think people want to see what the White House looks like, and when I proposed doing this story, you know, I said, " I want people to see where he worked. This is their house ." And the Obamas were very open to the idea because they said, " You know, this is the person who's voted into office by the people, and so, we should like someone photograph it ." I like this one more because I think the framing and spacing works. When you're a senator, you travelled back and forth to your state, to Washington back and forth, and you don't have that much time with your family. So, on the contrary to the campaign of the Senate, he actually has more time with his wife and his kids than he's ever had. And so, for him, I think one of the great threads that I wanted to show through the whole story is how Michelle Obama is not just his wife, it's his companion, his partner, and here's a man who-- it's so obvious that he's madly in love with his wife. >> Madam Speaker, Mr. Vice President, members of Congress, the First Lady of the United States who's around here somewhere. >> There's a photograph of the first lady and the president dancing and it's a room full of-- It is the Governors' Ball. And he has-- they have this amazing ability to just cancel the whole world out 'cause I don't get that-- you know, they work in a place where there are people around you all the time. And they just-- You could tell in this picture. He has his arms around her and his eyes were closed and it's just like he's in love with this woman, the rest of the world doesn't matter. I remember one day where we walked out of Vice President Biden's office and the first lady was on TV for doing her project on the gardens and he looked up and he, you know, talked. And as he walked down the hall, he just said, " Isn't my wife gorgeous? Isn't she just beautiful ?" In every word she has to say and I love how her legs are crossed and the fact that-- >> Yeah, how they're crossing out. >> What's so wonderful is that Sasha can pop into the Oval or he can run into Malia in a hallway and have a conversation about how her day was and he didn't get to do that before. We would go whole week on the campaign, maybe two weeks, and he wouldn't see his wife or his daughter. There are two things about him that I think relieve pressure for him. One is being funny. Another is-- you know, some people do have their worry beads, some people doodle-- Barack Obama palms basketballs and footballs. There's a photograph where he's in the Oval Room, he's being briefed by Denis McDonough, one of his national security advisers, you know, and he's just, you know, been briefed all day, so he just has this football. He's just playing with it, you know, just kind of-- It's a way to wind down. And I think it's one way for staff to know that the president is secure before he goes out and makes a major speech or secure before a press conference because if he can still kid around, then he's feeling comfortable. >> This is my first trip overseas as President of the United States. >> The whole of the United Kingdom welcomes President Obama. -[ unk ]. I'm proud to stand here with you in the middle of this great city, in the center of Europe. And, to paraphrase one of my predecessors, I am also proud to be the man who brought Michelle Obama to Prague. I came here to reaffirm the importance of Turkey and the importance of the partnership between our two countries. It is time for us to transition to the Iraqis. They need to take responsibility for their country and for their sovereignty. >> I wanted to show something that showed how the military reacted and here's a person who said, " We should go to war ." And on our first foreign trip, on the way back, we stopped in Baghdad. And that, you know, I never heard him say anything, but there had to be a part where he wondered how would they receive him, you know, and I think, for a lot, just having the president come. And then when you're serving in the middle of nowhere, you wonder, " Does everybody remember that we're here ." He went in there and he spoke to them and he talked about what he felt. >> Just as we thank you for what you've already accomplished, I wanna say thank you because you will be critical in terms of us being able to make sure that Iraq is stable, that it is not a safe haven for terrorists, that it is a good neighbor and a good ally, and we can start bringing our folks home. So-- >> He worked the line and I think what's amazing with it, at one point, this, you know, grown man, big, strong man just hugged him and he hugged the guy back. And you know, the guy is not just hugging the president of the United States, he's hugging a person. You know, " Man ," he's like, " don't forget about us ." You know, now, that we're here and I think it was a big step because you don't know how you're gonna be perceived. You go there and you're shooting these pictures and it's so emotional and you think, when you leave, you got these amazing pictures. It is funny 'cause you go back and you go, " Okay, they're okay ." There's a lot of people hugging each other, but-- 'cause there is actually, I don't think, any way you can capture how emotional that is. And it really was like-- You just realized how much all those people are there, you know-- They don't know you, they don't know any of us, they don't know this president, you know, and here comes in a team of people who decide their future and what they do. And I think it's easy for any of us, myself included, to forget that they're there. >> Thank you very much, everybody. God bless you. God bless the United States of America. >> He presented some Purple Hearts and then he met with some soldiers that had already received Purple Hearts and there was a one point where a young man came up to greet him and he had lost his arm serving, but he'd come back out to serve again. And you know, he extended a hand and the president shook it and they posed. And you know, you could tell there's a lot of pride in this person, but you just think, " I'm not sure I could come back ." I feel that my responsibility is document what's going on, but to be-- try to be fair because people are allowing me into their lives to take a piece of them. And I think, any time, I think the most important thing you can do is remember that you're very lucky to be doing this.
