The New England Patriots will re-sign safety Devin McCourty, he confirmed to Shalise Manza Young of The Boston Globe.
McCourty will sign a five-year, $47.5 million contract and reportedly turned down more money from other teams, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
McCourty, 28 in August, has played all five of his NFL seasons with the Patriots. In 2014, he recorded 68 tackles, six pass deflections and two interceptions.
McCourty, a 2010 first-round draft pick, has played cornerback and safety. He has made the Associated Press All-Pro second team at both positions—at cornerback in 2010 and at safety in 2013. McCourty moved to safety in 2012 after the Patriots acquired cornerback Aqib Talib from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Other teams that tried to sign McCourty include the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles. All made “a hard push” for the veteran safety, reports Rapoport.
With McCourty back in the fold, the Patriots seem likely to turn their attention to six-time All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis. The Super Bowl champions hold a $20 million option on Revis for 2015.
