The announcement comes after the previous director, Roberto Orci, [left the film](http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/star-trek-3-loses-director-754509 "undefined") earlier this month. The previous two installments were directed by J.J. Abrams, who passed on the third to focus on the new Star Wars movie. Lin is known for directing several of the films in the _Fast & Furious_ franchise: _The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift_, 2009’s _Fast & Furious_, _Fast Five_ and _Fast & Furious 6_.
