Norman Bridwell, 86, creator of the popular Clifford the Big Red Dog children’s books. The house-size dog, who debuted in 1963, inspired a television series and a feature film.

Vivek Murthy, as U.S. Surgeon General. Known as a strong proponent of gun control, he got only one vote from a Senate Republican. The post had been empty since July 2013.
NAMED
As the first female bishop of the Church of England, the Rev. Libby Lane. The appointment came just one month after a new law was signed allowing female bishops.
