The central character, a Navy SEAL named [Chris Kyle](http://nation.time.com/2013/02/03/chris-kyle-author-and-former-navy-seal-sniper-dies-at-38/) — played by Bradley Cooper — logged more than 160 kills during his service in Iraq. With Eastwood’s name attached and a Christmas release date, _American Sniper_ also seems to be a likely Oscar contender. Watch TIME’s interview with Kyle here: ## Transcript [00:00] Hi, I'm Belinda Luscombe. I'm an editor- at- large at Time [00:02] Magazine. Chris Kyle, the former Navy Seal. He's also [00:06] quite possibly the most lethal sniper in American military [00:10] history. And he's here today to face a little smattering of [00:12] friendly fire with ten questions at Time magazine. [00:17] Mr. Kyle, thanks for coming. Thanks for having me. So, [00:20] you've got this new book, American Sniper. Isn't it kind of [00:24] not done amongst you special operations guys to talk about [00:28] your, your, your stuff? Yes, it is kind of frowned upon. So [00:33] why did you decide to do the book? I wanted to be able to [00:36] get it out about not the sacrifices that the military members [00:40] make. But the sacrifices that their families have to go [00:43] through. About the, the single mothers now, raising the [00:47] children and doing all the day to day house chores. But [00:50] then also stories about my guys who deserve to be out [00:54] there. They didn't get the Medal of Honor, so you don't [00:56] know about' em. But they died heroes and people should [00:59] know about' em. I believe that number is 160 is the [01:03] sort of number of confirmed [ CROSSTALK ] Yes, ma'am. [01:06] [ CROSSTALK ] sniper kill? Can you tell me what, explain [01:09] what it is to have a confirmed sniper kill? Alright, well while [01:12] you're on your sniper rifle, you take a shot and the guy [01:16] goes down and you have to have witnesses verify that he [01:19] is dead. And does it get recorded as part of the battle [01:22] damage assessment or? Every time we come back we [01:24] have to fill out an assessment of what happened [01:27] throughout the day. The time, the place, the caliber used, [01:30] the distance he was. What exactly he was doing, where he [01:33] was standing, what he was wearing. It's all in the detail. So [01:37] and there's that somewhere we can't get more than 80 but [01:39] somewhere there's 160 of those forms with your name on [01:42] them. Yes, Ma'am. What goes through your mind when [01:45] you're shooting a, a, a guy, it's usually a guy? The first time [01:49] of killing someone it You're not even sure you can do it. I [01:53] mean, you think you can but you never know until you're [01:56] actually put in that position and you do it. And then you [01:59] double think in yourself, my God will I do this? Am I gonna [02:03] be okay? And then you're asking your leadership am I [02:07] cleared hot to be able to do this? Am I gonna be in trouble? [02:10] You know this guys really bad. And then you're worried [02:13] when you get home All the politicians are gonna hang you [02:16] out to dry and put you on trial for murder. But the first kill [02:19] that you write about in the book, you actually kill a woman. [02:23] And she has in one hand, uh, the hand of her [02:27] toddler and in the other hand she has a grenade. Was that [02:31] the hardest? For all the kills you had to do? Yeah, I had to [02:34] do it to protect the marines. So, do you wanna lose your [02:38] own guys or would you rather take one of them out? You [02:41] have two sets of kind of heads [02:46] in that you have your I'm back in America head and your [02:48] I'm at war head. Your two different people. You turn it on [02:52] and turn it off. You're a little more aggressive when you're [02:55] at work and when you come home. You relax and try [03:00] to be the different person. And my wife always said that [03:03] when I came home from work I'd take my cape off and put [03:06] on the dork cuz I stub my toe or break my toe or something [03:10] at home. But at work I was fine. Does your wife still [03:14] have to say your name before she gets back into bed? [03:16] [ LAUGH ] It's not as bad. But that was [03:20] even before I was in the military. I've always been, [03:23] extremely jumpy, when I'm asleep. And the reason your [03:25] wife has to say your name before she gets back into bed? I [03:29] will come up swinging. So, [ LAUGH ] depends on how [03:33] tired. If I'm out cold, then You can ring the doorbell and I [03:36] will be asleep. I have to ask this question but, are there any [03:39] kills you regret.? No! Not at [03:44] all. Because they you feel like it was either you killed them [03:48] or they killed other Americans? Yes m'am. You know, you [03:51] in your book actually that most I think I'm quoting that most [03:54] American's can't handle the reality of war. And the reports [03:57] they, they sent back. The reports being the journalists, [04:00] didn't help us at all. Which actually sounds a lot like Jack [04:04] Nicholson in A Few Good Men. Did you realize that? You [04:06] can't handle the truth. [ LAUGH ]. Is that, is that how you [04:09] feel that Americans just can't? Yes ma'am. So we should [04:12] just, you're on Jack's side in this one. Yes ma'am. You, you [04:15] do not think. For the most part, the public, very soft. You live [04:18] in a dream world. You have no idea what goes on, on the [04:22] other side of the world. That, the harsh realities that these [04:27] people are doing to themselves, and then to our guys. [04:31] And there are certain things that need to be done to take [04:34] care of em. Now if people, if people did start out with the [04:38] impression, before they have read your book that you were [04:42] that a person who have killed upwards of 150 other [04:46] people was a violent person. Maybe [04:52] a bloodthirsty person. I, I'm not sure that the book would [04:56] free them of that feeling. I really don't care what they think [04:59] of me. I mean, I've got my family. I've got my friends. I'm not [05:03] trying to make new friends. And the people who, if you [05:07] actually spend time with me, you'll find out. I'm just fun [05:10] loving guy. Now I, yes, I have been trying [05:14] to be a little more aggressive if I need to be, but I don't go [05:18] around dumping people. If you never ha, got to kill another [05:22] person again, would you be okay with that? I'm fine. I don't [05:25] have to kill to live. But you were good at it. I was decent [05:29] at it. What if killing people turns out to be the thing you were [05:33] better at than anything? I know it's not true. I'm a better [05:36] husband and father [ LAUGH ] than I was a killer. I mean, [05:40] I've got a job now I'm good at. I'm pretty comfortable with [05:43] not having to kill anyone. Now, don't take deer hunting [05:46] away from me.
