The beloved comic book icon will meet his glorious end in Wednesday’s installment of _Life with Archie_ when he tries to stop an assassination attempt on Kevin Keller, the first openly gay character in Archie Comics. Archie’s impending doom was first announced in April. “He dies heroically. He dies selflessly. He dies in the manner that epitomizes not only the best of Riverdale but the best of all of us,” Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater told [The Associated Press](http://bigstory.ap.org/article/archie-be-shot-saving-gay-friend-comic-book)[_._](http://bigstory.ap.org/article/archie-be-shot-saving-gay-friend-comic-book)“It’s what Archie has come to represent over the past almost 75 years.” Keller’s character was introduced to the series in 2010 in the Archie spin-off _Veronica_.
