Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” The hand-written notes include a near-final draft of the lyrics, a few scattered doodles of animals in the margins, and most evocatively, several rhymes that never made the final cut. “Dry vermouth, you’ll tell the truth,” reads one discarded phrase, and one familiar phrase “like a complete unknown” is connected by a line to the name “Al Capone.” Dylan wrote the lyrics across four pages of hotel stationary in mid-June, 1965, during a stay at the Hotel Roger Smith Hotel in Washington D.C., according to Sotheby’s. He later recorded the song when he was 24 years old. The manuscript was sold as part of a dedicated pop music sale at Sotheby’s. ## Transcript I'm Clair Sudda And I'm Josh Sanfrun. And we are trying to figure out what's the best way to celebrate Bob Dillon's 70th birthday. [ MUSIC ] And then we had an idea. We thought we'd take you back to where it all started, New York City. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] We are outside Cafe Wha we are on the corner of Macdougal and Manneta, at Greenwich Village. Cafe Wha was, sort of a central location For, the folk scene, and for, a lot of beat poets and a lot of beat writers came here. And according to legend, it's the first place that Bob Dylan played when he moved to New York in 1961. [ MUSIC ] You are looking at Panchito's Mexican Restaurant but in the 60s this place was the sprawling basement coffee house and club called The Common and then later it was renamed The Fat Black Pussycat. Bob Dylan played here sometimes, a lot of people played here, this is really one of the places where the folk singers struggling to be recognized came [ MUSIC ] See the sign up there that says The Village Gate? Oh yeah. That's the original sign. So the CBS right here. As you can see from the sign above it, used to be called The Village Gate. It was this performance venue in 1962 and there was this guy named Chipmunk who did the lighting for the Village Gate and he lived in an apartment below it. He would later go on to do lighting for Woodstock Festival, Monterey Pop Festival, that sort of stuff. And Dylan was in his apartment in 1962 when he wrote A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall [ MUSIC ] We are remaking the cover of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. People come almost everyday. And I see them, you know, takin' their picture. Always looking for where, where exactly the position. Do they go up the block? Down the block? But it's actually right, right here. [ MUSIC ] And the story is that Dylan he lived in his first apartment just down the street and him and his girlfriend, Suzie Rotolo, they just walked over here and did the photo shoot. And it was in the winter and it was very cold. And she even said that Dylan wore this very light jacket because he wanted to look the part. [ MUSIC ] So when Bob Dylan first moved to New York he didn't have a lot of money and he ended up staying on people's couches. But eventually you know, he got a little money together and he got his first apartment at 161 west fourth street, which is that building right over there. Yeah, and what's also is interesting is Dylan's old apartment is now a sex shop, called Tic Tac Toe. [ MUSIC ] So that was Bob Dylan's [ INAUDIBLE ]. It's good to know it's exactly the same as it was in 1961. Well, except for the exotic novelties. Yeah. [ MUSIC ].
