New born Prince William with Diana Princess of Wales and Prince Charles
Royal Debut On June 21, 1982, Prince William became the first heir to the British throne born in a hospital. The following day Prince Charles and Princess Diana, who spent 16 hours in labor, left London's St. Mary's Hospital with William swaddled in a blanket. He weighed in at 7lb and 1.5 oz. Crowds gathered outside of the hospital and Buckingham Palace to welcome him to the world.David Levenson—Getty Images

Diana's hands-on style of parenting became evident almost immediately. She refused to leave nine-month old William in London while she and Charles made an official visit to Australia and New Zealand in 1983. As William and his younger brother Prince Harry grew older, Diana did her best to make them worldly, but also compassionate. The boys later accompanied her to homeless shelters, orphanages and hospitals around the world. Bob Thomas—Popperfoto/Getty Images
Prince William At Eton College
Both William's father and grandfather attended Gordonstoun, a boarding school in Moray, Scotland, which is known for its strict rules. Prince Charles detested it, which may explain why 13-year old William enrolled at the prestigious Eton College instead. Diana may also have influenced that decision: her father and brother had attended the exclusive boarding school in Berkshire as well. Prince William In Chile
After finishing high school William spent a year traveling in Belize, Chile and Kenya, among other places. In this photograph, taken on December 7, 2000 in Tortel, Chile, the 18-year-old prince crosses a bridge on his way to repair walkways as a volunteer with the Raleigh International Expedition. The U.K.-based charity works with volunteers to help improve conditions for communities throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America. An interpreter who traveled to Chile with Prince William's 141-person expedition team was forced to leave Patagonia after organizers learned that she also worked as a journalist. Officials from St. James's Palace worried that she might compromise the prince's privacy.Toby Mellvile—UK Press/Getty Images
The Middleton Family Release Images Of Kate Middleton
Their university days were over, but William and Kate knew their relationship wasn't. Taken on June 23, 2005, the day of their graduation ceremony at the University of St. Andrews, this Middleton family snapshot captures the prince in a tender moment, caressing Kate, whom he met four years earlier. During their time at St. Andrews, the couple enjoyed relative privacy from photographers under an agreement brokered between Clarence House (Prince Charles's official residence), Britain's Press Complaints Commission and newspaper editors.Middleton Family—Clarence House/Getty Images

On April 14, 2010, news broke that Britain's most talked-about couple were over, and that they had decided to part ways while skiing in Switzerland. Clarence House made only one statement: "We don't comment on Prince William's private life." A nation mourned. But by June the media began reporting on a potential reconciliation. Joint appearances in public, including the memorial concert for Princess Diana staged on July 1, 2007, above, seemed to confirm it. By the time the two hit the slopes in Klosters, Switzerland in March 2008, the press had moved on from the breakup and wondered aloud when "Waity Katie" would finally get her proposal.Leon Neal—AFP/Getty Images

The Wedding of Prince William with Catherine Middleton - Procession
On April 29, 2011, an estimated one million people lined the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of the horse-drawn carriage carrying Prince William and his bride from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace after their wedding. Surely William knew the spectacle afforded the public more than an afternoon of free entertainment and that it symbolized much more than the union of husband and wife. For the hundreds of millions of people around the world watching on TV and online, it was a reminder of monarchy's charm and unifying power. Economic woe grips Britain, and public distrust of politicians is multiplying by the day. But William and Kate managed to burnish the Windsor family name simply by sharing their joy with Britons.Samir Hussein—WireImage/Getty Images

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have played central roles in celebrations marking the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. On June 13, 2012, they appeared with Her Majesty in Nottingham. At one event, the Queen unveiled a plaque and William gave a speech thanking her for her service to the country. "How grateful we all are to you for the extraordinary devotion and love you have shown to the people of this country and the Commonwealth," he said. As tomorrow's king, it's only a matter of time before those sentiments are directed at him.Rui Vieira—AFP/Getty Images
