HOT TIP
Step beyond the bustle of Central and the concrete of Kowloon by seeking out Hong Kong's green spaces, like Sai Kung's country parks or the 360º vistas visible from the Peak Trail. The World Wide Fund for Nature arranges weekend tours of the Mai Po Marsh reserve, a bird-watcher's paradise, for only $9 a person (tel. 852-2526-4473). The new, updated Lonely Planet tome on Hong Kong has directions for scaling the Dragon's Back Ridge in Shek O and greeting dusk on Lantau's Sunset Peak. Spaces are full for Trailwalker '98, the 48-hour, 100-km trek along the spectacular MacLehose Trail that starts Nov. 13, but fit and fearless nature-lovers may want to check out the Samsung Action Asia Challenge on Nov. 29. It's no walk in the park: participants will run through forests, climb mountain trails, cross streams, crawl through holes and careen down muddy slopes, all in the name of charity.
Applications must be mailed in by Oct. 31; get details by calling 852-2179-5888 or via the website at www.actionasia.com.
