Experts have long known that a healthy diet should include plenty of fruits and vegetables. But how much room is there for other favorites, like meat and dairy? This week, TIME writer Markham Heid looked into the vegan diet, to figure out whether it's healthier than a diet that contains animal products. The answer might surprise you, and he includes some good advice about eating less processed grains and refined sugars. If you still want to give a vegan diet a shot, experts say it's important to make sure you’re getting the proper nutrients, such as finding new sources for B12, in nutritional yeast or vitamin supplements, to replace what you would typically get from foods like meat and eggs.
