Western Washington University

Bellingham, WAwww.wwu.edu
With about 16,000 students, Western Washington University is medium-sized but offers some of the same advantages as smaller colleges, such as the strong likelihood that all your classes will be taught by faculty members. The campus also has a mix of student-types: more than half of freshmen enroll with some college credit and nearly three-quarters of transfer students come from a state community college. The college is near the northern border of Washington, between an arboretum and a bay, and near plenty of natural resources, including hiking and ski trails. It should come as little surprise, then, that sustainability is a major fabric of campus life. The university, for example, was one of the first with a college devoted to environmental science; that's one of eight distinct colleges within the university, including one for education and another for performing and fine arts. Students in the arts program -- or just curious about its subject matter -- can enjoy the dozens of outdoor sculptures that dot the campus. Western Washington launched a degree program in energy policy recently and has been using all renewable energy for over a decade, after students voted to pay an annual fee to do so. The university consistently ranks as one of the top producers of Peace Corps volunteers.
