University of Iowa

Iowa City, IAwww.uiowa.edu
The University of Iowa is a large, public research institution serving over 30,000 students. Founded just 59 days after Iowa became a state back in 1847, it offers more than 200 majors, with particular strengths in science, health and the arts. Students say the school community is friendly and diverse, and it was the first university to ever officially recognize an LGBT organization. Its average annual cost is slightly lower than the national median. Aside from student life, Iowa is home to the well-known Writers' Workshop residency program, as well as the three-year Playwrights Workshop that Tennessee Williams once participated in. The Center for Research by Undergraduates helps students connect with mentors and research opportunities in various disciplines. With more than 500 clubs and organizations, students will have plenty of activities to choose from outside the classroom, including sports. The Iowa Hawkeyes compete in the Big 10 Conference of NCAA Division I athletics. Meanwhile, the university's performing arts groups and artists put on more than 400 events each year, many of which are available to students for $5 or less.
