Texas Tech, a large public research institution, is the only campus in Texas with a major university, a law school, and a medical school. Its total enrollment is over 35,000, with over 30,000 of them undergraduates. The university consists of 10 colleges and offers some 150 undergraduate degrees. Its home base of Lubbock is in the northwest part of Texas, about 350 miles west of Dallas. A midsize city of about 250,000 people, Lubbock features an array of live music venues and even a symphony orchestra. As befits a school of its size, Texas Tech has more than 400 clubs and organizations for students to choose from, including more than 40 fraternities and sororities. Athletics is a big part of campus life, with the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders competing in 15 intercollegiate sports, and making regular appearances in the national men's football and basketball rankings. Fans signal their allegiance by forming their hands into mock pistols to give the university's trademark "guns up" salute.
