Taylor University

Upland, INwww.taylor.edu
This Christian liberal-arts college in rural Upland, Ind., puts faith at the center of the student experience. All of its about 2,000 students take a series of classes devoted to learning about God -- through the Bible, Christian history, and Christian doctrine. Equally, all students must take a certain number of liberal-arts classes from the major disciplines. Beyond the core curriculum, students choose from about 60 majors and minors, among them over 10 specialties within education as well as religious programs like biblical literature and youth ministry. Taylor has built up plenty of non-academic traditions in its more than 150 years, as well. Among them: Silent Night, the last men's basketball game before final exams, which students attend dressed in costumes and pajamas; the Welcome Weekend Hoedown, an annual square dance that takes place the night after freshmen move in; and the Cardboard Boat Regatta, in which students and their families construct homemade boats to sail on Taylor Lake. The school provides students with what it calls the Taylor Taxi service, a fleet of yellow bicycles that students can borrow from racks on campus. Other efforts at sustainable transportation include the construction of a pedestrian bridge connecting the campus to a nearby bus station, and an effort to assign students to dorms within walking or biking distance of class. Though fairly isolated, Upland is a 1.25-hour drive from Indianapolis and a 3.5-hour drive from Chicago.
