Saint Paul, MNwww.stkate.edu
St. Catherine University -- known to many as St. Kate's -- is named for St. Catherine of Alexandria, an Egyptian teenager who converted hundreds to Christianity before being martyred. The university, in St. Paul, Minnesota, is a private, liberal arts school heavily influenced by its Catholic heritage, and dedicated to social justice and the promotion of women. Nearly all of the school's some 4,700 students are female, and about a quarter of them enroll each year in one of dozens of courses that have a service-learning component. All new students at St. Kate's take a class called The Reflective Woman, a writing and discussion seminar that focuses on cultural analysis, critical thinking, and communication. Nursing is by far the most popular of about 60 majors at St. Kate's, which span the areas of health, business, humanities, and social work, as well as another 35-plus through partnerships with other Twin Cities private colleges. Four out of every five students at St. Kate's is from Minnesota, although the school also has a robust online program. Besides the primacy of community service, campus culture also features dozens of student groups: About two out of every three students get involved. Students can also enjoy the arts and nightlife on offer in St. Paul and nearby Minneapolis.
