Salisbury University

Salisbury, MDwww.salisbury.edu
Part of Maryland's public college system, Salisbury University's brick buildings and lush grounds give it the feel of a private institution. And no wonder -- the 145-acre campus is home to more than 2,000 plant species and was named a national arboretum in 1988. SU's approxmately 7,800 undergrads choose between about 40 majors in the sciences, liberal arts, business, education, social work, and health-related fields. The school is a big supporter of student entrepreneurship. Salisbury alum and local businessman Richard Bernstein hosts a yearly business plan competition in which winners receive funding to launch a venture. SU offers many opportunities for students to give back to the community. The biggest event occurs every fall, when SU hosts the Sea Gull Century, a bike ride for charity that draws some 6,000 cyclists from around the state, including many students and faculty. Located in Southeast Maryland, the school is perfectly placed for student fishermen or women; it's just a half-hour's drive west to the Chesapeake Bay and a 45-minute drive east to the Atlantic Ocean. Meanwhile, aspiring politicians and policy wonks can be in Washington D.C. in less than two and a half hours.
