Mount Saint Mary's University

Los Angeles, CAwww.msmu.edu
Mount Saint Mary's University, a Catholic women's college, significantly outperforms schools with similar student demographics on measures of graduation rates and career earnings. Many Mount Saint Mary's students are the first in their family to go to college, and about 30% are minority students. Well over half of the about 2,000 undergraduates qualify for low-income grants. MSMU's program features a strong commitment to liberal arts, with each student required to take 16 courses -- in philosophy, arts, and Catholic theology, among other subjects -- that make up the school's core curriculum. The school offers around 40 majors as well as a host of minors and special progams. Students can gain certification in youth ministry, or in the university's long-established and well-known nursing program. Many activities focus on women's leadership development, and MSMU students are known as Athenians, named after Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. Less than a quarter of students live on the undergraduate campus in the Santa Monica Mountains. The university also has a downtown Los Angeles campus used primarily for co-ed graduate programs and associate degrees.
