Marist College

Poughkeepsie, NYwww.Marist.edu
Marist College is a small private school with Catholic roots that sits on the picturesque banks of the Hudson River. With about 5,000 undergrads, Marist allows students to enjoy a sense of community without everyone knowing each other's business. Students live on campus in housing by class year, so it's easy to form a group of friends early on. Classes are small, and professors encourage in-class participation as well as out-of-class discussion. Though the school isn't officially affiliated with the Catholic Church or the Marist Brothers anymore, religion still plays an important role in daily life, with many students getting involved with campus ministries. Other popular extracurriculars include student government and a student-run TV station. Fraternities and sororities have an obvious presence at Marist, but they don't dominate the social scene. Students stay entertained on campus with school-sponsored concerts, comedians, and activities. Poughkeepsie, N.Y., is a friendly college town, but when students want the big city, Manhattan is just a train ride away. For students who want a change of pace, Marist hosts retreats at nearby destinations and offers a unique study-abroad experience at its satellite campus in Florence, Italy.
