John Carroll University

University Heights, OHsites.jcu.edu/
John Carroll University, a Jesuit school in the Cleveland suburbs, is open to students of any religious background. But its Jesuit heritage is certainly visible on campus with the Institute of Catholic Studies and the Ignatian Spirituality Institute. As part of the liberal arts core curriculum, all of the about 3,000 undergrads must take two philosophy courses, two religion courses, and a one class on social justice. The school offers about 70 majors, with robust humanities programs that allow students to specialize in degrees such as History of Philosophy and Peace, Justice, and Human Rights. Like other Catholic schools, John Carroll encourages volunteerism, and many courses have an element of service learning. Students sometimes complain that there's not a huge party scene on campus, and for off-campus entertainment, the best bet is to make the 10-mile drive to Cleveland. The university isn't particularly diverse: about 85% of students are white. For a small, non-elite school, John Carroll boasts some well-known alumni, including HBO founder Charles Dolan, broadcast journalist Tim Russert, and Hall of Fame NFL coach Don Shula.
