Fresno Pacific University

Fresno, CAwww.fresno.edu
Sponsored by the Mennonite Brethren Church, this roughly 4,000-student university in southeast Fresno tends to draw students who are the first in their family to attend college. There are about 1,300 graduate students, and the undegrads are split evenly between traditional four-year undergraduate degree seekers and adults in a flexible school program that balances academics with family or job responsibilites. Fresno Pacific's student body is extremely diverse, with about a quarter of Sunbirds identifying as Hispanic, and about half identifying as white. More than two-thirds of students are women. FPU's STEM program caters to first-generation college students who may need help adjusting. It includes a Summer Bridge, in which incoming freshmen spend a few weeks on campus before classes start, getting used to dining halls and dorms. Students in the two-year program take all their freshmen classes together and receive additional individual instruction if needed. The STEM program has gained national recognition for its extremely high graduation rate. Diversity is also celebrated in other ways at FPU. Every November, the school hosts a Thanksgiving lunch that features dishes from all the countries represented in the student body. Before the lunch, the international students walk in a Parade of Nations, carrying their home country's flag, some even wearing traditional garb.
