Dordt College

Sioux Center, IAwww.dordt.edu
This small, private school in Iowa gets its name from the Synod of Dordrecht, an international meeting of reformed churches in the early 1600s. The 60-year-old college is associated with the Christian Reformed Church, a centuries-old Protestant denomination; and the school takes a "Christ-centered" approach to academics. The top majors for its about 1,500 students are education, business, engineering, agriculture, and nursing. (Engineering includes 10 different specialties, from mechanical and chemical to robotics and energy systems.) Dordt offers numerous opportunities to study abroad, thanks to affiliations in Australia, China, France, Ghana, Honduras, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, among other countries. The vast majority of the school's students live on campus, although some (typically married) students live off-campus in the 7,000-population town of Sioux Center. The closest big city, Sioux City, Iowa, is about an hour's drive away. The school takes a strict approach to alcohol and drug use. Students suspected of the latter can be subjected to a drug test for repeated tardiness or a decline in academic performance. Each October, the school celebrates Defender Days, a mash-up of parents' and alumni weekends that brings hundreds of visitors to campus, where they can catch theater and musical performances, athletic competitions, and networking events.
