Dominican University of California

San Rafael, CAwww.dominican.edu
Located about 12 miles north of San Francisco in Marin County, Dominican puts a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary studies. Freshmen start their academic careers with a program called First Year Experience Big History, which studies the history of the universe by drawing on multiple academic fields. Students might study "Business and Trade through the Lens of Big History" or "Myth and Ritual Through the Lens of Big History." Students then move on to the Colloquium Program: Each is made up of two courses around a shared theme and taught by two faculty members from different disciplines -- say, a history of disease as depicted in art, taught by a nursing professor and an art history professor. Dominican comes with a hefty price tag, but the school is generous with financial aid -- about 90% of students receive it. Students can take advantage of about 50 wide-ranging academic programs, including eight graduate degrees. Nursing, business administration, and biology are popular among the approximately 1,500 undergrads; occupational therapy and counseling psychology are strong among about 500 grad students. Each year, Dominican seniors present a painted shield to the incoming freshman class to help guide them during their time at the school. The painted designs are eventually carved into wooden shields, which are presented to the class at their commencement.
