Colby College

Waterville, MEwww.colby.edu
One of the oldest private colleges in the U.S., Colby prides itself on its low student-faculty ratio and the opportunities it provides for undergraduate research. Each January, students can participate in Jan Plan, an exploratory term that allows them to focus on a single subject or experience -- which can mean anything from studying geology in Bermuda to learning the art of fly fishing in California. On campus, Colby's 2,000 undergraduates praise the close relationships they're able to form with professors, some of whom invite even students over for home-cooked dinners. Academically, social sciences programs are the most popular on campus. About a quarter of students receive federal loans to finance their college careers, and post-graduate salaries are slightly higher than the national median. The campus has an idyllic, New England feel, with an on-campus arboretum and nature trails. But its location in central Maine is a bit off the beaten path, with nearest large city, Portland, some 90 minutes to the south.
