Carleton College

Northfield, MNwww.carleton.edu
Carleton is a small, well-regarded liberal arts school in Northfield, Minn., an hour outside of Minneapolis. It characterizes its curriculum as intense and challenging. The biggest complaints you'll hear from Carleton students concern the lack of nightlife in Northfield and the generally dreary weather (and freezing winter temperatures).Otherwise, Carleton students seem almost universally happy with both the academics and their fellow students. The vast majority of students live on campus, which helps produce a rich culture -- there are over 250 student organizations, including a radio station and a weekly newspaper. Classes are small and very challenging, and professors are accessible to students in the off-hours. Intellectual discussions permeate social conversations in the dorms and at parties, and the tone is more collegial than competitive. The diversity among students, while still an issue on campus, improves with each passing year, and most students interact and intersect over their four years due to the small campus and the generally amiable atmosphere. Carleton boasts a high graduation rate, and the school's alumni also tend to earn above-average salaries in their early careers.
