California State University-Stanislaus

Turlock, CAwww.csustan.edu
California State University, Stanislaus is part of the massive, 23-campus California State University system. With its modest student body of some 9,000 on two campuses, the central California school's size isn't too overwhelming. Designated as a Hispanic-serving institution by the U.S. Department of Education and receives grants to expand its ability to teach underrepresented populations. The university also recently ranked in the top 20 on a higher education Social Mobility Index created by PayScale and CollegeNet. That's not surprising considering that the college's graduation rate of 57% is 44% higher than expected based on its student body demographics, and graduates report average salaries above their peers from similar universities. The university started as a small college with fewer than 800 students at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds. Now, students describe the 228-acre campus as park-like, rife with ponds and streams. Depending on whether you head east or west, a road trip from the Turlock campus will put you at the edge of Yosemite National Park or in the San Francisco Bay area in under two hours.
