Settled into the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, California State University, San Bernardino offers terrific views in addition to solid academics. The school, one of the 23 campuses of the Cal State system, receives national and international attention for its school of business, which is the most popular undergraduate major. Criminal justice, psychology and health-related fields also attract many students. Overall, the school offers more than 70 academic programs spread over five colleges. CSUSB has developed a variety of focused student support programs including its Veterans Success Center and Coyote First STEP (Student Transition Enhancement Program), a free fully residential summer program for incoming students aimed at helping them improve their math skills before the semester starts. CSUSB's Hispanic population is 63%, and it's designated a Hispanic-serving institution -- a federal program that assists U.S. colleges expand educational opportunities for Hispanic students. It has a first- to second-year retention rate of 85% for first-time freshmen; 55% of students graduate within six years, and the university says that 81% are first-generation college students. In 1986, it opened its Palm Desert campus, which serves the Coachella Valley, some 70 miles southeast.
