In recent years, the job of a dentist was considered to be the best in America, according to U.S. News and World Report’s annual survey. But in 2018, the healthcare career has been dethroned by a tech position that offers a better quality of life, according to the report.
Software developers took the top spot on this year’s U.S. News and World Report survey of the best jobs in America. The ranking uses data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to judge positions based on demand, work/life balance, growth potential, and more, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.
Software developers, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics describes as “the creative minds behind computer programs,” pull an average salary of $108,080, according to the survey, and are in “huge” demand. That trend is expected to continue in future years, according to U.S. News careers reporter Rebecca Koenig, who contributed to the analysis, the Tribute reported.
“Our society is more and more dependent on digital technology for all aspects,” she said. “Not just [large tech firms such as] Facebook and Google, but every other business needs software developers to make their applications. Even hospitals are tapping into digital communication to make sure doctors and patients can communicate.”
Healthcare jobs dominated the top rankings over the past decade, particularly dentistry, which came in second this year, and orthodontia, which topped the list last year. Other healthcare professions ranked highly this year as well — physician assistants came in third, and nurse practitioner was number four.
But this is not the first time software developers beat out the competition. It was previously ranked the best job in U.S. News and World Report’s survey in 2014.
