There’s just something about Black Friday that turns even the most ordinary, usually-well-mannered people into frenzied shopping monsters.

“I can’t believe the level of rudeness that somehow comes out of people this day,” one former Black Friday worker told Business Insider.

“I had my fair share of rude customers on regular days, but Black Friday brings out a really ugly side to people,” she said. “I’m sure it’s a combination of being out there early and the long lines, but I can’t imagine being rude to someone else over a discounted sweater.”

If you have any sympathy for the people working in retail on Black Friday, who often have no choice but to be there, you’ll try to do better as a shopper.

To help you out, we asked Black Friday workers and ex-workers — who have worked at stores ranging from high-end Manhattan boutiques to big box retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, and Target — to anonymously share the annoying things they wish shoppers would stop doing.

Here are 14 things you may have been doing wrong this whole time.


1. Trying to get lower prices on sale items

“It’s already on sale. Please stop.”


2. Distrusting salespeople

“Asking you to double check if there are additional sizes or options in the back, even after you tell them there aren’t.”


3. Trying to sneak into the back room for products

“I saw a woman try to sneak into the back room when she didn’t believe we were out of her size.”


4. Asking associates to call other stores

“Don’t make us call other stores to find another size, color, or length. It’s the busiest day of the year and the other stores get super annoyed having to answer our call. If it wasn’t meant to be, it wasn’t meant to be. Just go buy it online.”


5. Undoing neatly-stacked piles of clothes

“I wish customers would stop messing up folded clothes on tables and shelves. They can ask for assistance in finding their size so that a staff member can carefully help them.”


6. Walking away from the mess they just made

“It’s so annoying when people pull something out from the bottom of the pile, knocking the whole thing over, and just walk away. At least try not to make a mess. That goes for any time, not just holiday shopping.”


7. Not putting things back properly

“Please stop taking clothes off hangers and then draping it over folded stacks of clothing.

“Putting clothes on the hanger is the easiest to put back — just help out.

“I don’t understand why shoppers add to the mess when they know it’s difficult to shop and look for sizes when stuff is a mess.”


8. Arguing with sales associates over company policy

“We don’t make the policies, and if we bend the rules, our jobs would be on the line.”


9. Complaining about prices

“Asking for coupons and then complaining about how expensive everything is is annoying. As a retail employee, I have no control over prices.”


10. Throwing a tantrum

“Yelling doesn’t solve anything, and throwing things everywhere creates a major headache for the associates.”


11. Being mad that the line is long

“It’s BLACK FRIDAY!”


12. Fighting in line

“I once saw a fight between strangers because someone changed lines. They did not cut in line, they just got behind the other line. And someone in front of that person — so no way they were being affected — decided to verbally attack this person. The person fought back. Nasty things were said, and both these individuals had kids with them to witness this.”


13. Shopping on Thanksgiving

“Stop shopping and spend time with your family.”


14. Taking your kids

“I worked at Toys R Us some years ago. No stand out bad customers, but it surprised me how many parents brought their young children out at 3 a.m. and then got mad and would yell at their children for whining or crying because ‘You can’t get any toys, Christmas is next month. Ask Santa.’
