Today’s students and parents aren’t always on the same page when it comes to college. In fact, they sometimes seem to be in totally different books. That was one of the striking themes to emerge from a new survey released today by MONEY and Barnes & Noble College.

The generations do see eye to eye on some important matters. Half of both groups, for example, say they were surprised by how expensive college turns out to be. And they’re generally in accord on the benefits of a college education, with “preparing for a fulfilling career” high on both their lists.

But there are also some major disconnects when it comes to other questions, such as who’s paying those big college bills and whose pockets all that money is really coming from. The graphic below tells the story.
