In February, the FDA approved Medtronic’s BrainSense adaptive deep brain stimulation, which regulates the triggering brain signals with more real-time adjustments than previous methods. Surgeons implant a stimulator in the patient’s chest, which is connected with electrodes to the brain. The device continuously analyzes neural activity for brainwaves typical of tremors, and steps in to modify those signals when they are detected. The dynamic, real-time adaptability makes it more accurate, providing just the right stimulation to reduce tremors.
