The Cleveland Browns on Monday released quarterback Vince Young, a 2006 first-round draft pick, after drafting Johnny Manziel.
The Browns also let backup quarterback Alex Tanney go. Brian Hoyer, Tyler Thigpen, undrafted free agent Connor Shaw and Manziel, a.k.a. Johnny Football, will compete for starting QB position.
Coach Mike Pettine said that Manziel isn’t guaranteed the job. “I don’t think you can hand jobs to people when they come in,” Pettine said, according to NFL.com. “It’s a situation where, despite what’s around him and what’s following him and there will be that pressure to play him, we’re in the business of evaluating who will be the best quarterback for the Cleveland Browns to win football games and that’s who’s going to play, whether that’s Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel.”
Hoyer said Friday that he welcomes the competition from Manziel. “I don’t want people to to think I’m sitting at home pouting,” Hoyer told NFL.com. “Everybody in America knew we were going to draft a quarterback. I’ve said a million times, I have all the confidence in the world in myself. So we’ll just see how it plays out.”
Manziel is atop the list of bestselling rookie jerseys.
