[Beyoncé](http://shriverreport.org/gender-equality-is-a-myth-beyonce/), [Miley Cyrus](http://time.com/84432/5-things-we-learned-from-mileys-elle-interview/), [Ellen Page](http://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/jul/03/ellen-page-interview-the-east) and [Lena Dunham](http://metro.co.uk/2013/01/14/lena-dunham-the-fact-my-girls-character-is-not-a-size-4-is-meaningful-3348636/) have come out as feminists, while [Kelly Clarkson](http://entertainment.time.com/2013/10/30/kelly-clarkson-not-a-feminist/) and [Carrie Underwood](http://www.cosmopolitan.com/celebrity/exclusive/celebrity-feminists#slide-13) have said that they are not. ([Katy Perry is on the fence.](http://time.com/28554/katy-perry-feminist-after-all-confused/)) And though many define feminism simply as equality between men and women politically, socially and economically, what constitutes the movement is up for debate among stars. Shailene Woodley has [previously been quoted](http://time.com/27165/why-hollywood-desperately-needs-shailene-woodley/) on the importance of movies’ empowering messages for women. So we decided to ask the star of the upcoming _The Fault in Our Stars_ about her views on feminism. **TIME:** You’ve talked about before—with _Divergent_ specifically, too—about being conscious of the kind of messages that you’re sending to young female fans when you’re taking on roles. Do you consider yourself a feminist? **Shailene Woodley:** No because I love men, and I think the idea of ‘raise women to power, take the men away from the power’ is never going to work out because you need balance. With myself, I’m very in touch with my masculine side. And I’m 50 percent feminine and 50 percent masculine, same as I think a lot of us are. And I think that is important to note. And also I think that if men went down and women rose to power, that wouldn’t work either. We have to have a fine balance. My biggest thing is really sisterhood more than feminism. I don’t know how we as women expect men to respect us because we don’t even seem to respect each other. There’s so much jealousy, so much comparison and envy. And “This girl did this to me and that girl did that to me.” And it’s just so silly and heartbreaking in a way. It’s really neat to see: there’s that new Judd Apatow \[sic\] movie coming out, _The Other Woman_, and that looks really good because I think it’s really neat that it shows women coming together and supporting each other and creating a sisterhood of support for one another versus hating each other for something that somebody else created. **TIME:** So even though what they’re coming together for is to bring down a man… **SW:** Yeah, but they create a sisterhood. And he did something wrong, and they’re, you know. They’re going to go after him for it. I think it’s great. Not everyone agrees _The Other Woman_ (which was not made by Judd Apatow) is so empowering. Some [applaud the film for featuring strong female leads](https://www.entertainmentwise.com/news/147203/The-Other-Woman-Star-Cameron-Diaz-On-Twenty-Years-Of-Playing-Empowering-Women), while others argue that its [egregious inability to pass the Bechdel test](http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2014/04/24/306437557/the-other-woman-when-terrible-movies-happen-to-funny-actresses)—a simple rule that questions whether two women in a film talk to one another about something other than a man—and its [objectification of women](http://www.vulture.com/2014/04/every-line-kate-upton-says-in-the-other-woman.html) is degrading. Whatever her views on _The Other Woman_ and feminism, Woodley has been lauded so far for selecting powerful female roles: both of her summer flicks, _Divergent_ and _The Fault in Our Stars_, pass the Bechdel test. ## Transcript [ SOUND ] You're weak. [ SOUND ] You have no muscle. [ SOUND ] I play the character of Beatrice Prior. More recognized as Tris Prior. And she starts off in a faction called Abnegation, which values selflessness. And throughout the film she decides to transfer into a different faction which values bravery. And her constant battle within her own mind is, am I selfless or am I brave. And through that indecision she becomes, she becomes a young woman, and, and also brings others with her and starts to save her whole colony. [ LAUGH ] What, did you get pushed? No. What's your name? Is it a hard one? You can pick a new one if you want, but make it good. You don't get to pick again. Tris. My name's Tris. First jumper Tris, welcome to Dallas. [ SOUND ] Cut. And action. You're not gonna jump, are you? No, I'm just trying to get a good vantage point. Good thinking. [ SOUND ] You don't have to come with me. Wow, you should go easy. You took a beating. I'm surprised you noticed. Saw you leave during the fight. Well, it wasn't something I really wanted to watch. The world of Divergent is giant. It's, sort of unfathomable. The pit alone. The pit we're in right now is almost the size of a whole sound stage. They really, you know, the, it's one thing to read a book, especially a book about the future, and then to come up with that world. And through the director, Neil Berger. And through the art department, as well as every other department involved in this movie. They created something that is relatable. You know, it's something we recognize in today's world, today's society. But it's also tweaked just enough to establish that it is something of the future. You know, we're of the future in this movie. We're not, we're not in the present day. In [ INAUDIBLE ] there's a finely Russian [ INAUDIBLE ] hand to hand combat. The idea is to create torque and speed. Protecting your hands while maximizing damage to your opponent. Will, get into the ring, hands by your sides. [ SOUND ] Good. Get in pairs. And, action! [ BLANK_AUDIO ] Divergent, visually is going to be extremely compelling. And I think that's gonna bring a lot of people in. Cause its this new world, and it's, it's full of new experiences and, and new walls to sort of explore. But ultimately, what drew me to this movie and what I think will draw a lot of people is that it's very metaphorical to things that are happening today and there's a lot of beauty in that. There's a lot of beauty in seeing a movie that visually is stunning and that takes you on a roller coaster of emotions through the characters, experiences but yet you can also relate to. And this being a dystopian sort of futuristic world, and yet having so many comparisons to today's model and to take what's going on in today's world, I think is very intriguing and very interesting.
