The 34-year-old Paralympian — who became a double amputee at 19 years old — has had to improvise when it comes to what prosthetics she wears on _Dancing With The Stars_. Purdy usually wears prosthetics designed for swimming. When speaking about her dancing prosthetics, Purdy said “I originally got these just thinking they were a little bit prettier and I could wear a taller heel and maybe \[go\] for a tango. It freed my hips up so that I could move how I wanted to.” ## Transcript [00:00] Amy Purdy's got dancing feet, literally. The 34 [00:04] year old para Olympian who became a double [00:06] amputee at 19 years old has had to improvise when it [00:10] comes to what prosthetics she wears on Dancing With [00:12] the Stars. I actually went with the swimming foot that [00:15] isn't even made for dancing, it's made for swimming so [00:17] you can put a flipper on. But, we found that I could [00:20] stand up on 'em, balance on 'em, and, and get the [00:23] lines that we wanted. Purdy told People more about [00:26] her very special legs. I originally got these just thinking [00:30] they were a little bit prettier and I could wear a taller [00:32] heel and maybe for a tango. It freed my hips up so [00:35] that I could move how I wanted to. Purdy says the [00:38] biggest challenge with the prosthetics is that every step [00:41] she makes has to be precise. She can't misstep and [00:44] catch herself like her competitors. But she doesn't want [00:47] anyone to think that's holding her back. And instead of [00:50] looking at my legs like, like, they're hindering me from [00:53] doing something. They may be more of like an [00:56] accessory or something that could help us accomplish [01:00] something. And the legs definitely aren't a hindrance.
