María Zardoya, la vocalista principal de la banda de pop indie latino The Marías, siente que ha existido entre dos mundos casi toda su vida. Nació en Puerto Rico pero creció en el suburbio de Snellville, Georgia, donde se sintió demasiado latina para encajar. Pero cuando visitaba Puerto Rico, no se sentía lo suficientemente latina. Es un sentimiento familiar para una gran parte de los jóvenes latinos en los EE. UU. Y, en cierto sentido, Zardoya dice que ella y la banda también existen en este espacio liminal. “Siento que ese tipo de identidad con el que crecí también se manifiesta en la industria de la música, y todavía estoy descifrándolo,” dice.


Después de lanzar su álbum debut en 2021, The Marías fueron invitadas a ser artistas destacadas en el álbum de 2022 de Bad Bunny, _Un Verano Sin Ti_, donde aparecieron en la canción “Otro Atardecer,” y rápidamente pasaron de hacerse un nombre en el mundo indie a ser absorbidas directamente por el mainstream.
