As of Mar. 7, 228 measles cases in 12 states have been confirmed so far this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s [latest numbers](https://www.cdc.gov/measles/cases-outbreaks.html). Outbreaks have been particularly severe in [Washington](http://time.com/5524505/measles-washington-vaccination/) and [New York](http://time.com/5541872/brooklyn-measles-outbreak/) states. The sick person in New Hampshire reportedly contracted measles while traveling abroad, as the CDC says is often the case. The international traveler also took a bus from Boston to Manchester, N.H. in late February, [WCAX reports](https://www.wcax.com/content/news/Measles-case-reported-in-New-Hampshire--507023131.html). No measles cases have been confirmed in Massachusetts this year, according to the CDC’s tally. A case of travel-related measles has also been confirmed by Michigan health officials, [Fox 2 Detroit reports](http://www.fox2detroit.com/news/local-news/travel-related-measles-reported-in-oakland-county), although Michigan has not yet been officially added to the CDC’s list. The sick individual stayed in Israel and New York — both of which are in the midst of measles outbreaks — before visiting several locations in Oakland County, Mich., according to Fox 2. Measles is a contagious but vaccine-preventable viral infection that is spread through coughing, sneezing and other close contact. It typically involves symptoms such as fever, runny nose, cough and a body rash, but severe complications can include pneumonia, brain swelling and death. However, no measles-related deaths have been reported in the U.S. since 2015, [according to the CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/measles/downloads/measlesdataandstatsslideset.pdf). Though measles was declared eliminated from the U.S. in 2000, officials have said clusters of vaccine skepticism have contributed to the outbreaks in the U.S. That resurgence has prompted some lawmakers and advocates to [call for stricter vaccine policies nationwide](https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/430333-washington-state-house-committee-passes-bill-to-ban-vaccine-exemptions), but lawmakers in at least 20 states have actually called for expanding non-medical exemptions or requiring doctors to provide patients with more information about the risks of vaccines, [according to CNN](https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/06/health/vaccine-exemption-bills-across-us-trnd/index.html). (While all states require students to get some immunizations before coming to school, most allow parents to opt out of those policies for religious or philosophical reasons.) Outgoing Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb recently [hinted at](http://time.com/5534592/fda-commissioner-federal-government-vaccine-policies/) someday implementing federal vaccine regulations to override lax state laws, calling intensifying measles outbreaks an “avoidable tragedy.” ## Transcript My mother is an anti- vax advocate that believes vaccines cause autism, brain damage, and do not benefit the health and safety of society. Despite the fact such opinions have been debunked numerous times by the scientific community. I went my entire life without numerous vaccines against diseases such as measles, chicken pox, or even polio. However, in December 2018, I've been catching up on my missed immunizations despite my mother's disapproval. It's important to understand that as I approached high school and began to critically think for myself, I saw that the information in defense of vaccines outweighed the concerns heavily. To combat preventable disease outbreaks, information is, in my mind, the forefront of this matter My mother would turn to anti vaccine groups online and on social media looking for her evidence in defense rather than health officials and credible sources for certain individuals and organizations that spread this misinformation the instill fear into the public for their own gain selfishly and do so knowing that their information is incorrect for my mother her love affection and care as a parent was used to push an agenda to create a false distress. and these sources which spread misinformation, should be the primary concern of the American people. I quickly saw that the evidence and claims for myself were not accurate, and because of that, and because of my healthcare professionals I was able to speak with, and the information provided to me, I was able to make a clear, concise, and scientific decision. Approaching this issue with the concern of education And addressing this information properly can cause change as it did for me. Now although the debate around vaccines is not necessarily centered on information and concerns your health and safety this is why education is important and also why misinformation is so dangerous.
