The cover was illustrated by [San Francisco-based artist John Mavroudis](http://time.com/5414486/christine-blasey-ford-time-cover/) who used words and phrases from Ford’s testimony during the Senate hearings on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to create Ford’s portrait. “It’s been awhile in coming but the word ‘legacy’ as in ‘legacy media’ is finally getting its due again. And so it seems fitting that we’re in the Luce auditorium today. Luce invented the TIME cover 96 years ago next month, and D.W. Pine, TIME’s Creative Director, is proving week after week how valuable and powerful it still is.” said TIME Editor-in-Chief Edward Felsenthal at the American Magazine Media Conference held in the Henry R. Luce Auditorium in New York on Tuesday. “And so I want to salute D.W., who is having the best year of his illustrious career telling the visual story of this extraordinary moment. And I want to thank the entire TIME team, who amid some incredible transitions have made this an amazing year for our journalism and our business.” “What I’ve always loved about TIME is our authority to cover a wide range of topics—from health to politics; business to sports; science to world news,” said TIME’s Creative Director D.W. TIME also received the [ASME Cover of the Year Award in 2016](http://time.com/4664419/time-meltdown-best-cover/) for an illustration of Trump created by [the artist Edel Rodgriguez](http://time.com/4528598/donald-trump-meltdown-cover/). ## Transcript [ MUSIC ] For the year one cover, that same week, Michael Wolff had published His book called Fire and Fury, and the whole concept was about kinda this idea where he was kind of like an out of control fire. That was what was in my head. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] When I met with the students, the first striking experience was that how determined they were. On the image I wanted to show the complexity of the Their feelings on the complexity of the emotions, and I started to shoot. I tried to intervene as less as possible because everything was in their face. Everything was in their body positions and their gestures that You dont need to explain anything. [ MUSIC ] He has exaggerated traits. A plate of golden hair on his head. Orange skin. He has a built in x on his face. His eyes go this way. His scowl goes this way. The red tie. I've always portrayed his as a serious This person when I show his face. Just a blank stare, that makes it more effective. His words that then carry all the weight, the illustration doesn't have to do it. He makes it easy for artists. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] I wanted to do a piece about Putin and Trump, and And I think it's a really good time to be doing this kind of piece because as far as I am concerned, dictatorships and democracies do not align. They just don't go together. [ MUSIC ] And there was a A certain moment where she tilted her head back and closed her eyes. It was almost like in Repose or prayer and that seemed to be the moment when I was reading through testimony. There was a few quotes that really stood out one of them was when she said I tried to yell for help that. Clearly to me belonged in the mouth area. The word itself looked kind of helpless sitting there by itself and I thought that was reflective of her testimony. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] The Beyond Hate cover came up at the week of the shootings at the Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh. It's still a tree that is made on the American flag. And we still have this great community. We got the hope of this country is that even on these circumstances We have millions and millions of people that are opposed to what's happening. [ MUSIC ] It seems that every few years, few months or all the time we have to ask our question of who's not being included in this definition of an American. If we're thinking about citizens, or culturally kind of, what is an American. Meaning like, does a piece of paper make you an American or is it something more? [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] This was certainly a very difficult year for journalists and the media covering the stories all around the world. And we felt this year that that was really a very important aspect to be able to spotlight on the cover. And use the Time cover and Time's Person of the Year to be able to showcase Some of the amazing work that's going on underneath amazing threats to chew just doing their jobs. [ MUSIC ]. Times cover has been around for 96 years and the importance is always placed inside that red border and what is time going to how are they going to crystallize the news for us? Even more so now it becomes as important as it was back in 1923 when Henry Lewis first decided he wanted to put the world's news on the cover of a magazine.
