President Donald Trump’s doctor has recommend that he lose some weight, but said that the president is in excellent physical and mental health otherwise.

Speaking in the White House briefing room Tuesday afternoon, White House physician Dr. Ronny Jackson described the results of four hours of physical and mental health testing on Friday.

“The president’s overall health is excellent,” he said, adding “there’s no indication whatsoever that he has any cognitive issue.”

Jackson, who served presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama as well, said he recommended that Trump lose 10 to 15 pounds over the next year through alterations in diet and exercise. Trump currently weighs 239 pounds, which at 6-foot-3 puts him just under the technical definition of obese under the body mass index, or BMI.

“He would benefit from a diet that is lower in fat and carbohydrates and a routine exercise regimen,” Jackson said, but acknowledged that Trump is famously averse to exercise. “He’s more enthusiastic about the diet part than the exercise part,” he said, joking that he may bring First Lady Melania Trump on board to make sure her husband sticks to a diet and workout plan.

These periodic health evaluations are arguably particularly critical for Trump, who at age 71 is the oldest person ever elected president for a first term. News reports in recent weeks have also shed light on some of Trump’s dietary habits: he reportedly drinks [12 Diet Cokes](http://time.com/5061146/donald-trump-diet-coke/) a day, and he regularly[ orders from McDonald’s](http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/donald-trump-mcdonalds-order-revealed-two-big-macs-fillet-o-fish-chocolate-malted-shake-a8090716.html), according to [Michael Wolff’s book _Fire and Fury._](http://time.com/5098415/the-unpresident-why-donald-trump-will-never-change/?xid=homepage&pcd=hp-magmod) In another new book by two former aides called [_Let Trump Be Trump_](https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trumps-campaign-big-macs-screaming-fits-and-constant-rivalries/2017/12/02/18bcfa30-d6bd-11e7-b62d-d9345ced896d%5Fstory.html?hpid=hp%5Frhp-top-table-high%5Flewandowskibook-410pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&utm%5Fterm=.297cbb6d423e), Trump is described ordering “two Big Macs, two Fillet-O-Fish, and a chocolate malted” for one meal from McDonald’s.

“On Trump Force One there were four major food groups: McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, pizza and Diet Coke,” the authors say.

Jackson said he’s going to have a nutrition specialist come meet with the White House chefs. “I think the main thing we focused on with regards to lifestyle changes are diet and exercise,” Jackson said. “If we get diet and exercise right, the weight loss will come.”

Jackson said Trump sleeps four to five hours per night, and takes Propecia for prevention of hair loss. Jackson also addressed the incident in December when Trump appeared to [slur his words](http://www.cnn.com/2017/12/06/health/did-trump-slur-his-speech-bn/index.html) during a speech: Trump does not wear any dentures, Jackson said, and the incident was likely the result of a dry mouth caused by Sudafed that the president had been taking.

The medical checkup also came amid renewed concerns about Trump’s psychological health. After the publication of Wolff’s book, which claimed that some of Trump’s aides considered him unfit for office, the president defended himself on Twitter as “[a very stable genius](http://time.com/5090982/donald-trump-twitter-stable-genius/).”

Jackson said that he wasn’t planning on administering any cognitive tests to Trump, but the president requested them. He performed a test called the [Montreal Cognitive Assessment](https://www.bmc.org/sites/default/files/For%5FMedical%5FProfessionals/Pediatric%5FResources/Pediatrics%5F%5FMA%5FCenter%5Ffor%5FSudden%5FInfant%5FDeath%5FSyndrome%5F%5FSIDS%5F/Montreal-cognitive-assessment-MoCA.pdf), a 10-minute test which tests for mild cognitive dysfunction, and said Trump scored 30 out of 30.

“Absolutely,” Jackson said, “he’s fit for duty,”

## Transcript

[00:00] The president's overall health is excellent. His cardiac
[00:02] performance during his physical exam was very good.
[00:05] He continues to enjoy the significant long- term cardiac
[00:08] and overall health benefits that come from a lifetime of
[00:11] abstinence from tobacco and alcohol. We discussed
[00:14] diet, exercise, and weight loss. He would benefit from
[00:17] a diet that is lower in fat and carbohydrates and from
[00:19] a routine excercise regimen. It for any type of cognitive
[00:22] issues, Alzheimer's and all those other things and so
[00:27] the fact that the president got 30 out of 30 on that
[00:29] exam I think there's no indication whatsoever that he
[00:32] has any cognitive issues. There was an incident
[00:34] recently where the president apepared to Slur his
[00:36] words while giving an address. Did you look into what
[00:39] the cause of that might have been at all? I did. We
[00:42] talked about that. And actually, one of my EMT
[00:46] consultants was involved in that. We evaluated him. We
[00:50] checked everything out. And everything was normal.
[00:52] We even went so far as to do an ultra sound of his
[00:54] proatile glands and a few other things. And there was
[00:57] absolutely no clinical findings that would suggest I think
[01:01] the reason for that was quite honestly, me being up
[01:02] here right now I think I need a drink of water. I
[01:07] think that I had given the President some medication.
[01:10] Specifically some Sudafed on the days previous. I think
[01:13] that I had inadvertently kind of dried up his secretions
[01:16] a little bit more than I. I intended to and I think that to
[01:18] our Deputy Secretary. What is this daily exercise for
[01:19] [ UNKNOWN ]
[01:23] So I would say [ UNKNOWN ] on a day- to- day basis
[01:26] he doesn't have a dedicated, defined exercise
[01:29] program and that That's what I'm working on, the
[01:34] good part is that we can build on that pretty easily.
[01:38] One of the things is, I'm getting nutrition specialist to
[01:40] come up here and meet with the chefs that we have
[01:42] here and their gonna go over the preparation of the
[01:44] president's food. Just to make sure that we're cutting
[01:47] the calories and the fats and the carbohydrates as
[01:51] much as we possibly can, we're still making a good
[01:53] meals for him With regards to the exercise, that's
[01:56] something that myself, and potentially Mrs. Trump will
[02:00] work with him upstairs. There's a gentlemen upstairs,
[02:03] and we'll get that set up to his specifications, and we'll
[02:07] see how that goes.
