Kimmel, who hosts _Jimmy Kimmel Live!_, opened his show by detailing what has become the [deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history](http://time.com/4964666/madalay-bay-las-vegas-shooting/?xid=homepage "undefined"). At least 59 people were killed and more than 527 were injured when a [shooter opened fire](http://time.com/4966239/stephen-paddock-hotel-room-guns/ "undefined") on a music festival from the Mandalay Bay casino and resort in Las Vegas. Kimmel, who recently came to attention as an activist after challenging [Republican health care efforts](http://time.com/4957089/jimmy-kimmel-republicans-health-care-debate/ "undefined") to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, criticized party members for failing to pass gun control measures, despite the continued occurrence of mass shootings in the U.S. “It seems to be becoming increasingly difficult lately. It feels like someone has opened a window into hell. What I’m talking about tonight isn’t about gun control; it’s about common sense,” he said. “Common sense says no good will ever come from allowing a person to have weapons that can take down 527 Americans at a concert.
